For White Night Ballarat, artist Kim Anderson’s intricately detailed line drawings of trees were transformed into a mesmerizing, immersive installation. Standing at an impressive three meters tall, the trees appeared to breathe, thanks to an internal automated mechanism designed to stretch and push the fabric trunks in rhythm with a haunting soundscape of heavy breathing. This unique experience placed the audience within an enchanted forest, evoking a sense of awe and wonder.

Anderson drew inspiration from her fascination with the relationship between nature and human emotion, exploring how feelings such as grief and longing can be mirrored in the external landscape. The installation’s design, blending artistry and engineering, revealed the trees as ancient guardians of the forest, silent witnesses to centuries of human existence.

The project was a collaboration between FORM, Kim Anderson, and Picture Thinking, combining artistry, technical expertise, and storytelling to bring this ethereal piece to life.
